TARDISODES
Army of Ghosts
In a newspaper office a young male reporter tells his editor he can get her the biggest story of the century, the story of Torchwood. She tells him to find it for her and soon he is on the streets communicating with secret contacts who provide him with evidence to back up his suspicions of an organisation stretching back to the time of Queen Victoria.

He begins to see what all of this has in common with the ghosts that have been appearing across the globe and no sooner has he finished he is handing in his story. He tells his editor to publish it quickly or he will be found out…but t is too late.

His editor has double crossed him and handed him over to Torchwood, who provide hew with a new nondescript front page and take the young reported away, who screams out that he knows the truth about the ghosts…

Doomsday
A newsreader sitting at her desk in a TV studio delivers an emergency broadcast. The country is under attack and the government have declared it a state of emergency.

As she talks clips of the Cybermen attacking army strongholds are shown on screen, the metal giants wiping out anyone and anything that stands in their way.

The reporter hears from her earpiece that there is no new word from the government; the country is on its own. She unnervingly explains that the Cybermen are everywhere, before urging people to run if they see the metal monsters.

Suddenly the building is under attack and as the desperate newsreader falls to the floor explosions rock the room, destroying the set. The reporter then tearfully calls out to her mum and dad before attempting to sign off, but it is too late.

“WE ARE THE MASTERS OF EARTH. CONQUER AND DESTROY. EXTERMINATE.”

“Planet Earth. This is where I was born. And this is where I died. For the first nineteen years of my life nothing happened. Nothing at all, not ever. And then I met a man called the Doctor, a man who could change his face. And he took me away from home in his magical machine. He showed me the whole of time and space. I thought it would never end…”

“How long are you going to stay with me?”
“Forever”

“That’s what I thought. But then came the army of ghosts; then came Torchwood and the war. And that’s when it all ended. This is the story of how I died…”

Army of Ghosts
(drn:43'18")

The Doctor and Rose arrive back on Earth and go to see Jackie, bearing gifts from their travels across the galaxy. Despite a warm welcome the travellers find their visit is sidelined when Jackie reveals another visitor is on his was; Rose’s granddad Prentis.

The young traveller finds this odd, as Prentis has been dead for years. She and the Doctor join Jackie in the kitchen where they are shocked to find a strange apparition forming, a jet-black humanoid figure surrounded by light. Jackie introduces it as Prentis but the Doctor is suspicious.

Soon they are on the streets outside the estate where they find dozens of ‘ghosts’ interacting silently with other human beings. Jackie explains the ghosts arrive in shifts and the Doctor is concerned that the apparitions worry nobody. Jackie then explains the shift is about to end and sure enough the figures begin to fade, but not on their own accord.

In an unknown location two scientists pull at heavy levers, reducing some kind of power output and sure enough as they do so across the city the ghosts fade away. The Doctor, Rose and Jackie all return to the flat where a flick through the television channels shows that the ghosts are appearing all over the world, not just London.

Jackie reveals that the ghost started appearing two months ago and after the initial panic it sank in that it was luck the dead were returning. Rose asks why she thinks the ghost in the kitchen was Prentis and she tells her it smells like he used to. Rose reveals she cannot smell it and her mother explains you have to want to see the person in order for the ghost before it becomes a reality.

The Doctor realises that the whole incident is faked; it is a trick of the mind, a psychic link. The ghosts are using this will power to pull themselves into existence. Jackie asks what the ghosts really are and Rose agrees that they do at least look human. The Doctor theorises that the ghosts are pressing themselves into the surface of the planet, and a footprint doesn’t look like a boot…

Back in the office with the levers the head of the operation, a woman called Yvonne Hartman is checking information with her various staff, before using her earpiece to contact a scientist called Rajesh, asking for information on his project. He reveals there have been no advancements, despite new machinery all possible readouts have shown ‘the sphere’ does not exist. After he has finished speaking he approaches a giant spherical object hanging in mid air. He reaches out to touch it but recoils and steps away.

In the office Yvonne orders that something be taken down to Rajesh to keep him occupied whist two of her employees; Gareth and Adeola communicate with each other over their computers. They arrange to meet and after making their excuses they each make their way out of the office. They arrive in a part of the building under construction; reduced to a maze of semi-transparent sheeting. Gareth goes ahead and steps inside but Adeola is more sceptical. After he gives no answer to her questions she follows him inside. She finds no sign of him but is confronted by a tall well-built figure standing on the other side of a piece of sheeting. She asks if it has seen her friend but it gives no reply. It pulls the sheeting separating them away and reveals itself; it is a Cyberman. Adeola screams as the metal monster approaches.

Back in the TARDIS the Doctor has mounted a strange rucksack to his back and outside a triangle of beacons sits on a strip of grass, which will help him to trace the ghosts. Jackie asks if he does not find the dead returning to their loved ones beautiful but he claims it is horrific. He returns inside the ship and gives Rose instructions of what to do when the next ghost shift starts. He returns outside to power up the machinery and Jackie joins them.

In the office Gareth and Adeola return to their desk and apologise to Yvonne for their lateness. She tells them the next ghost shift is about to start and as the scientists pull the levers to increase the power levels, Adeola and Gareth, now wearing two beeping ear pods instead of the usual one, pluck the data surrounding the levers onto their computer screens.

As the Doctor continues to power up the beacons Jackie observes Rose leaning over the TARDIS console. She comments how similar to the Doctor she has become and then asks what she will do when she is dead and gone. Rose tries to avoid the question but Jackie notes that when she is gone Rose will have no reason to go home, she will keep on changing and in forty or fifty years time she will be on some alien planet a million miles away. “But she’s not Rose Tyler. Not anymore. She’s not even human.”

Soon the ghost shift is starting and as the Doctor waits outside a ghost forms between the beacons, trapped by a ring of electricity. Rose and Jackie watch on the scanner as the Time Lord puts on a pair of 3-D glasses to watch the apparition and back in the office, an alarm goes off. Yvonne rushes to see what it is and another worker called Matt begins to trace the interference of the ghost shift. She orders the shift to be closed and the levers are set down, meaning the ghost the Doctor has trapped fades.

In the office Yvonne and Matt trace the source of disturbance closer and closer to an exact reference and when they patch into a local CCTV network they find a solitary item standing near a playground; a large blue Police Box. Yvonne watches it with misty eye and realises it is him.

Back in the TARDIS the Doctor tells Rose that the ghosts have been brought into existence from one specific point and he can trace it. He flicks at the controls and soon they have taken off. In the office Yvonne realises what this means; he is coming. She contacts Rajesh to tell him and he in turn looks at the sphere, telling it that now they will have it under control.

The Doctor rushes around the console room activating controls and talking excitedly to himself. He realises Rose is being more reserved and when he asks her why she reveals he has forgotten something; Jackie is still onboard. Sure enough when he looks around he sees her sitting on the service balcony mounted to the wall; telling him sternly that if they end up on Mars she is going to kill him.

Deep beneath the office building, down in the basement a patrol of soldiers ready themselves, guns aimed as the TARDIS hones into view. Inside the ship the Doctor, Rose and Jackie observe their actions on the scanner and the Time Lord realises that they have lost the element of surprise. Nevertheless her prepares to leave, warning the others to stay inside. Rose warns him that the soldiers have guns but he simply tells her that although they can shoot him dead the moral high ground is his.

He steps outside alone and the soldiers cock their rifles. Yvonne approaches and they all applaud him. He looks on stunned and introduces himself. They applaud again and after he realises they known him she tells him none of them would be here without him. They applaud again and Yvonne asks where his companion is, their record show he always travels with a companion. He reaches into the TARDIS and without looking accidentally drags Jackie outside instead of Rose.

Nevertheless he introduces her as Rose and tells them that only the other week she looked into the heart of the time vortex and aged fifty-seven years. She protests but amidst other light-hearted put downs she remains silent and soon she and the Doctor are following Yvonne and the soldiers out of the basement. Rose watches them leave once more on the scanner and is left to her own thoughts.

As they make their way around the building Yvonne tells the Doctor that it was only a matter of time before he found them. She welcomes them to the institution they are walking through; Torchwood. As she pushes aside doors the sight before them becomes massive, giant machines moving alien pieces of technology across a grand basement. The Doctor identifies various pieces of alien technology and Yvonne reveals that the institute utilise alien technology they either find or take by force; one such incident being the ray that killed the Sycorax spaceship on Christmas Day. The motto of torchwood is “If it’s alien, it’s ours.”

Yvonne tells them that the technology is used for the good of the British Empire. Jackie tells her there is no Empire but she merely tells her there isn’t one yet. She continues to show them different alien artefacts such as particle guns and magna clamps, devices capable of lifting tonnes of material with one hand.

The Doctor asks what the ghosts have to do with Torchwood but Yvonne tells him that is to come. Suddenly, Jackie realises the TARDIS is being driven away on a lorry and as Yvonne reminds them of the Torchwood motto, the Doctor tells her they will never get inside. The doors of the ship open a crack and Rose peers out. The Doctor nods at her and she disappears back inside, where she retrieves the psychic paper from the Time Lord’s jacket pocket.

Back in the main office Adeola is now computer messaging Matt, asking him to come with her. She gets up and leaves, and after glancing at his screen he follows. Elsewhere, the Doctor asks why after all of the times he has visited Earth he has not heard of Torchwood. Yvonne tells him it is because he is the enemy and tells him he is listed in the Torchwood foundation charter as an enemy of the crown. The Time Lord remembers his encounter with Queen Victoria and the werewolf in Torchwood House and Yvonne confirms that it was Victoria who started the institute to protect England from alien life, and as the Doctor is the enemy he is also the prisoner.

Soon they arrive at a new room, the room containing the sphere. Yvonne asks him to analyse it and after Jackie explains it gives her a very bad vibe the Doctor approaches it, again putting on his 3-D glasses in order to inspect it. Rajesh explains the sphere gives off no form of existence, no weight or mass. The Doctor explains that the sphere is a void ship, a vessel that exists outside of time and space in the void between dimensions. Some call it the void, the Eternals call it the howling but others call it hell. He explains something could live for an eternity inside and confirms something is inside.

He declares that it must be sent back to hell then asks how it came to Earth. Yvonne tells him it came into this world and the ghosts followed. The Doctor asks her to show him and they depart, on their way to the main office.

Adeola leads Matt to the network of sheeting and tells him to go inside. Reluctantly he does so, into a pool of red light and as he disappears from sight the sound of whirring drills and his screams ring out.

In the basement Rose emerges from the TARDIS and takes a lab coat. Putting it on she begins to scout around, finally seeing one of the other lab-coated scientists and with slight confusion, deciding to follow him.

Adeola returns to the main office where Yvonne shows the Doctor a large blank wall at one end, a hole in the world. Torchwood Tower was built to house the breech and Jackie realises the tower is actually Canary Warf. The Doctor starts cockily stating how they have been making the hole in the universe bigger but Yvonne claims that the energy it emits could power the entire country. She begins to make preparations for the next ghost shift but the Doctor warns her to stop it.

She declines so he shows her using a pane of glass and the sonic screwdriver how creating a hole in the fabric of space and time creates fracturing fault lines, which the ghosts are using to walk through via the void. As the glass splinters he explains that in the end, with too many ghosts, it will smash and sure enough the glass, the universe, collapses into pieces. Yvonne ignores him and makes preparations, claiming the levers can close the breech as well as open it. The Doctor again protests then mockingly gives up. He pulls up a chair and sits and watches as the countdown to the shift starts He stares at Yvonne and she realises he is right. She stops the shift and orders the glass be cleaned up. All the while, Adeola, Matt and Gareth are at their work, programming the levers…

Rose is still following the scientist through the basement levels of the tower and eventually comes to the door of the sphere room. She goes inside and shows her psychic paper to Rajesh, not knowing that all Torchwood employees have a low level of psychic ability, he can see that the paper is blank. As she looks on the other scientist turns and shows his face, it is Mickey. Rajesh orders the room be sealed and orders Samuel, alias Mickey to check the door seals.

In the office the Doctor theorises that the ghosts must have built the sphere as Yvonne is told that Rose has been captured. He is forced to tell her who Jackie really is then asks her not to add the incident to his records. Yvonne however has bigger problems; the ghost shift has been activated and as Adeola, Gareth and Matt type blindly at their computers the shift is activated. The levers slowly rise and the Doctor realises Adeola is in control, overriding the system. He looks up and sees that the blank wall is beginning to glow.

In the sphere room Rajesh’s communicator has gone down but as he speaks the room is rocked, pivoted around the sphere, it is active.

In the office the Doctor recognises the earpieces controlling Adeola, Gareth and Matt then unwontedly zaps Adeola with the sonic screwdriver. She screams and collapses and the others do the same. Jackie accuses him of killing them but he claims they were dead already. Yvonne tries to remove one of Adeola’s earpieces and with it comes an entrail of tissue; it is latched onto her brain.

The Doctor monitors the increasing power behind the ghost shift and tries to trace the source of the hijack. In the sphere room the sphere starts to vibrate and begins to register signs of mass and true existence. As a result the doors are automatically locked, they cannot get out. Mickey meanwhile tells Rose they have beaten ‘them’ before and will again.

Down below the Doctor and Yvonne, along with some soldiers arrive at the maze of sheeting and as in the office Jackie is left to watch the wall glow and the levers move on their own free will the Time Lord realises the ear pod technology signals the collision of two worlds, one he has seen before. Suddenly they are surrounded by giant metallic forms, which cut through the sheeting and step forward; the advance guard, the Cybermen.

In the sphere room Mickey explains that in the parallel world he was left to fight in, they had been fighting the Cybermen until they disappeared into this world. They followed and he is here to destroy what is inside the sphere, something he believes might be some form of leader of the Cybermen.

In the office the Cybermen bring the Doctor and Jackie back inside and destroy the other scientists trying to cancel the ghost shift. They maximise the power input and across the world, including in the Torchwood tower, hundreds of ghosts march through the void.

In the sphere room the sphere begins to separate into sections and separate, opening to reveal what is inside.

In the office Jackie asks what the Cybermen has to do with the ghosts and the Doctor reminds her of what he said about a footprint not looking like a boot; the ghosts are not spirits, they are an army of Cybermen. Sure enough the jet-black humanoid figures morph into Cybermen, in every location across the world and soon panic is sweeping the nation. The metal monsters stamp into peoples homes and places of work. Yvonne realises it is an invasion but the Doctor tells her it is too late for that, it is a victory.

In the sphere room, Mickey pulls a gun from under the table and prepares to kill what is inside, as the sphere opens further and further.

Back in the office the Doctor realises the sphere is not of Cyberman design, and sure enough the Cyber Leader tells him it was not theirs. The sphere broke through between dimensions, but the Cybermen merely followed it.

In the sphere the inhabitants of the void ship, the sphere begin to glide up out of the empty shell. Mickey realises they are not Cybermen, but Rose has seen them before; they are the creatures she has feared ever since she first set eyes on one lowly creature deep beneath the Arizona Desert. The creatures within the sphere are her and the Doctor’s worst nightmare; they are Daleks…

Doomsday
(drn:46'24")

“My name is Rose Tyler, and this is the story of Torchwood, the last story I’ll ever tell. This is the story of how I died.”

As the Daleks, led by the Black Dalek, advance to kill Rose, Mickey and Rajesh the young time traveller confuses them by showing that she, a mere human is aware of the Daleks and the Time War. She tells them they must keep them alive to find out why but the creatures are more concerned with awakening a device called the Genesis Ark, a domed object that has followed them out of the sphere.

Back in the office the Doctor admits he has no idea what has happened to Rose as the Cyber Leader makes a speech to the entire world, telling them that the Cybermen have taken over and that they will upgrade the planet. As Cybermen stand over families in their homes the Cyber Leader tells them they will delete race and sex, all indifferences will be taken away as the entire population is converted.

As Cybermen march across the city, unperturbed by army gunfire only defeated by heavy artillery, the Doctor and the others look on from the Torchwood tower, explaining to the Cyber Leader that the humans will never surrender, they are in every home, standing over their own children, of course they will fight.

In the sphere room the Daleks demand to know the least important of the three humans before them and reluctantly Rajesh offers himself. They tell him they need to find out more about recent Earth history and will extract his brainwaves. They glide forward and with their sensor sticks crush his head.

The Cybermen detect the alien machinery active in the sphere room and send two guards to investigate. The Daleks themselves release the burnt-out Rajesh and realise another race has attempted to invade Earth. One Dalek is sent to investigate and as both sides open visual links via the scouts they have sent out and the two metallic creatures approach each other they each discover their adversaries

Both sides demand the other identify themselves but both refuse. The Daleks eventually give away their name and soon realise the other creatures are Cybermen. The Doctor meanwhile uses Jackie’s phone to call Rose, realising she is still alive.

He listens to the Daleks conversation as they identify the Genesis Ark and after putting on his 3-D glasses watches as the Cybermen propose an alliance. The Daleks refuse and open fire, blasting the two Cybermen scouts to the floor.

The Cyber Leader consults the Black Dalek and states that war has been declared. The Dalek insists that it is pest control and after the two sides compare army numbers (five million Cybermen to four Daleks) the communication barriers are put up. The Daleks rewind the video and see a figure standing behind the Cyber Leader they recognise. They identify him as an enemy and when Rose tells them he is the Doctor she notes that they are starting to get scared.

In the office Yvonne and Jackie are dragged away for upgrading and in the sphere room the Daleks concentrate on opening the Genesis Ark. Mickey ponders why he and Rose have been kept alive but Rose has a theory, the Daleks might need her.

Down in the basement Jackie and Yvonne await upgrading. Yvonne explains the process of upgrading and as she finishes is led away, sobbing that she has done her duty for queen and country, before her screams pierce the air.

Back in the office, after the Cyber Leader lectures the Doctor on the weakness of emotions, in the middle of the room a group of soldiers appear and destroy the Cybermen in the surrounding area. The leader says hello to the Doctor and reveals himself to be Jake, from the other dimension.

Elsewhere, Jackie runs away from being upgraded when the Cybermen neglect her after realising the Cyber Leader has been destroyed. She runs for her life and starts to flee towards a staircase.

The Doctor splutters that travel between dimensions is impossible but Jake reveals he and his soldiers wear special necklaces they liberated from their own version of Torchwood. He places one round the Doctor’s neck and against his wishes activates the devices, landing them in the other dimension’s torchwood, a dilapidated room covered in debris. The Time Lord tries to explain he must get back but he is interrupted by Pete Tyler, who enters and tells him that he will have to listen for once.

In the sphere room the Daleks surround the Genesis ark and Rose remembers the first time she met a Dalek, when her DNA rejuvenated it due to the background radiation gained by travelling in time which the Daleks can feed off of. She and Mickey have travelled in time, their DNA will do. The Daleks then reveal to them that the Ark is of Time Lord design, the last surviving relic of their world. It contains the future.

In the parallel dimension Pete explains that after the Doctor left them the Cybermen, having been sealed in their factories, managed to infiltrate Torchwood and disappear into the other dimension. He goes on to tell him that Mickey is already there, as an excuse to find Rose. After the Doctor explains about what a good father and husband Pete could be to Rose and Jackie in his dimension he explains that the freak weather conditions in the parallel dimension are caused because of the inter-dimensional travel, it is punching holes in the universe. Soon both worlds will fall into the void.

Pete tells the Doctor that the breech must be sealed; despite the fact the Cybermen will be left in the other dimension. The Doctor remembers the Pete Tyler form his own world and what a good match this one would make with Jackie before deciding that Pete’s confidence in him to destroy the Daleks and the Cybermen as well as seal the breech is the spur he needs. Soon they arrive back in the Doctor’s dimension and the Doctor phones Jackie. She tells him where she is and he tells her to stay low before hanging up and then sets about modifying Jake’s gun to work on the Dalek armour. Some time later he is in a corridor waving a white piece of paper at two patrolling Cybermen, surrendering to them.

In the sphere room the Genesis Ark is at the final stage of awakening. Only the handprint is needed to open it. After the Daleks threaten to kill Mickey, Rose is forced to step forward but then decides to confront them. She tells them of the Emperor, how he survived the Time War but died at her hands, when she poured the Time Vortex into his head.

The Black Dalek prepares to exterminate her but the Doctor, wearing his 3-D glasses, arrives and stops him. He greets Mickey and his companion before realising that the four Daleks are the Cult of Skaro, who were left during the war to devise new ways of killing.

Mickey explains that the Genesis Ark is of Time Lord design but the Doctor admits he has never seen it before, both sides had secrets. The Daleks explain the Time Lord science will restore Dalek supremacy and Rose explains it needs the touch of a time traveller to awaken it. The Doctor comments that that is the one thing Daleks cannot do; touch. Sealed inside their casings they are completely alone, no wonder they scream.

The Daleks order him to open the Ark but he refuses and instead takes out his Sonic Screwdriver, using it to blast open a door and allow the Cybermen and the fighters from the other dimension inside, blasting the Daleks and confusing them. Pete and Jake help the others out into the corridor but Mickey trips and steadies himself by placing his hand on the Ark. He joins the others and the doctor seals the door. Soon the battle is over, the Cybermen have been exterminated and the Genesis Ark is primed. The head Dalek explains that the Ark needs a space of thirty square miles and together they exit the room.

As the Doctor and company flee Jackie, running down a corridor, is confronted by two Cybermen. Before they can act they are blasted apart by the newly arrived Pete. Jackie is astounded by his presence but soon after he explains where he comes from and he tells her to be proud of bringing up Rose, they are embracing one another.

Across Torchwood Tower the Daleks and the Genesis Ark are blasting their way to freedom, unstoppable against the Cybermen and the Torchwood soldiers. The Cyber Leader orders all Cybermen to return to the Torchwood tower and across London troops of them begin their marching.

Amidst the battle the Doctor, wearing his 3-D glasses, creeps into the store room and steals tow large clamp devices before retreating with the others, leaving the Daleks to override the sliding roof and elevate outside, as the Doctor ponders what the Genesis Ark really is. He orders the others to return to the office and when they arrive they finally see what is inside. The Ark opens and inside there advances an army of Daleks. Like a TARDIS it is bigger on the inside, a prison ship containing a million Daleks all flying out across the city.

Soon the troops of Cybermen are under attack and the Daleks are flying around the streets, exterminating both Cybermen and humans alike, led by the Black Dalek. Inside the office Pete hands Jackie one of the teleport necklaces and tells her she is coming with him. The Doctor prepares to seal the breech and finally reveals that his 3-D glasses enable him to see who has travelled via the void by illustrating the background radiation surrounding them, including himself and Rose but not Jackie. The Daleks and Cybermen have travelled through the void and thus if he opens the void all of the matter that has travelled inside will be sucked back inside.

Rose realises that as she has been through the void she will be sucked in with the others but the Doctor explains that that is why she must go with Pete and the others to his own world before the breech is sealed forever. He tells that the clamps he picked up will fix to the wall and he will hold onto them, keeping him safe. He sets about programming them and as Rose decides she must stay with the Doctor, bidding farewell to Jackie, he places a necklace over her head. Pete activates them all and she fades away to the other dimension.

However on the other side she refuses to be left behind again and manages to activate the necklace, sending herself back. Jackie tries to follow but Pete stops her and on the other side Rose refuses to go, even if it means never seeing her own mother again. The Doctor reluctantly sets her a task as Jackie is left to sob to herself.

The Cybermen are on their way back to the void entrance, having decided to retreat back to their own world but are stopped by the Cyberman version of Yvonne, who refuses to let them pass. Telling them she did her duty for queen and country she destroys them.

Soon the levers are operated and as the Doctor and Rose fix the clamps to the wall and pull the void levers the process tarts. They hold onto the clamps as every Cyberman and Dalek is sucked off of the face of the Earth and into the void. The Black Dalek however activates an emergency temporal shift and teleports away, leaving the Genesis Ark to follow the other Daleks.

However one of the levers begins to shut down, closing the void and Rose is forced to grab onto it, pushing it back to the online position. The suction starts again but despite the Doctor’s pleas to hold on Rose’s grip starts to slacken. He fingers slip and she hurtles towards the void. The Doctor screams out to her but Pete arrives in the nick of time and takes her back to his own dimension. The Doctor is left alone as the last of the Daleks are sucked into the void and it closes itself.

On the other side Rose pounds on the wall as Pete inspects one of the teleport necklaces, they cease to function, the Doctor has succeeded. In different dimensions the Doctor and Rose are left to clutch the wall where the void was opened, the Doctor stone-faced and Rose sobbing her heart out, separated from him forever.

Eventually the Doctor turns and walks away and Rose does the same. Jackie, Pete and Mickey all await her and reluctantly she goes towards them.

“Last night I had a dream. I heard a voice and it was calling my name. I told mum and dad and Mickey. Anyone else would think I was mad but not those three. They believed it, because they’ve met the Doctor so they listened to the dream. And that night we packed up, got into dad’s old jeep and off we went, just like the dream said. We followed the voice across the water, kept on driving hundreds and hundreds of miles ‘cos he’s calling. Here I am at last. And this is the story of how I died.”

On a winded deserted beach, Rose stands looking for something. Slowly the Doctor fades into view and explains he is inside the TARDIS, communicating through the very last crack in the universe. He explains that he is only an image and she can’t touch him, he can’t even come through properly because of the fractures it will cause.

Rose explains they are in Norway, and the beach’s name is Bad Wolf Bay. With the two minutes they have left she is lost for words until she explains that a baby is on its way, Jackie is pregnant. She tells him she is working for Torchwood; she knows a thing or two about aliens.

The Doctor tells her that she is listed as dead in their world, yet still she has an ordinary life day after day, the one adventure he’ll never have. Tearfully she asks him if she can ever see him again but he admits that she can’t. He explains he’ll go off on his old life, travelling the stars.

Fighting back tears she tells him she loves him and he tells her she is right to. He realises that if he’ll never have another chance to say it: “Rose Tyler…”

But it is too late. His images fades away and he is left in the TARDIS, tears running down his cheeks and his mouth failing to utter the last words he ever wanted to say to her. Rose is left on the beach to cry until Jackie, who stands with the others in the background runs forwards and hugs her.

Inside the TARDIS the Doctor begins the take off procedure but there is a surprise in store for him. On the gangway stands a woman in full bridal dress. She turns and looks at him and as he stutters in confusion and disbelief she asks him:

“Who are you? Where am I? What the hell is this place?”

Continuity Notes:
  • The Daleks first appear in the original series in The Daleks, and in the new series in Dalek. In their brief appearance in Army of Ghosts, it was unclear whether these Daleks are survivors of the oft-mentioned Time War between the Time Lords and the Daleks, or are themselves from an alternate universe (not necessarily the same one as the Cybermen). The Void Ship makes either equally possible. However, in Doomsday the Doctor and the Black Dalek both make it clear that the four Daleks are survivors of the Time War.
  • The preview shown at the end of Fear Her contained scenes for the entire two-parter rather than just Army of Ghosts. One of these scenes contained an early give-away of the Dalek's involvement, in the form of a a person being shot with an energy weapon and their skeleton being revealed as they're fried, the effect of a Dalek weapon since Rememberance of the Daleks.
  • Although mentioned in Bad Wolf as the correct answer to one of the Anne Droid's questions, Torchwood is first referred to in The Christmas Invasion, and created as a result of the Doctor's meeting with Queen Victoria in Tooth and Claw. Since then, it's been referred to in School Reunion (blocking Mickey's data access), Rise of the Cybermen (an alternate universe version, mentioned twice in background conversations), The Idiot's Lantern (the police are afraid of their involvement), The Satan Pit (the expedition represents the Torchwood Archive), Love & Monsters (the source of much of Victor Kennedy's information about the Doctor) and Fear Her (in the background). The Doctor is explicitly mentioned in the Torchood Royal Charter. When the Doctor notes that he's never heard of them in all his time on Earth, Yvonne Hartman makes it clear that this was deliberate -- he is the enemy, so they've kept their existence as secret from him as they could. It's somewhat odd that, in all his years with UNIT, he never butted heads with them over some piece of alien technology, but not entirely impossible. The Doctor can be notoriously unobservant, and Torchwood were trying hard not to be noticed by him.
  • Despite classifying him blithely as "the enemy" and making it clear that he is a prisoner, Yvonne Hartman clearly hopes to use the Doctor in a cooperative capacity similar to that which UNIT used him. She seems to be counting on the Doctor's natural curiousity and meddlesome nature to overcome any resentment at being a prisoner, and in fact, he does largely cooperate (and attempt to bully) as if he were not under any duress.
  • The concept of a Cyber Leader distinct from other troops dates to Revenge of the Cybermen and became a staple from that point forward. Although credited in Rise of the Cybermen / Age of Steel (recorded in the same block), the Cyber Leader actually makes his first New Series appearance here, with the traditional black handles on his helmet. No Cyber Controller is in evidence in Army of Ghosts.
  • The small Dalek task force appears to be led by a Black Dalek. A Black Dalek, sometimes referred to as Dalek Supreme, appears first in The Dalek Invasion of Earth and is seen leading Dalek forces whenver a Dalek Emperor or Davros aren't from that point forward. In Rememerance of the Daleks, for example, the Imperial forces were led by Davros, but the Renegade faction was led by a Black Dalek.
  • The Cybermen cutting through plastic to emerge is reminiscent of the emergence of the Cybermen from hibernation in Tomb of the Cybermen.
  • The use of Bluetooth earpieces as a control mechanism for uncoverted human agents is reminiscent of the use of the EarPods in Rise of the Cybermen / Age of Steel, although those were not wired directly into the brain. The use of hardwired control implants suggests that the alternate universe Cybermen are starting to utilize partial conversions, as the Mondasian / Telosian Cybermen have since Tomb of the Cybermen.
  • The Cybermen now have energy weapons embedded in or mounted on their ams. This seems inconsistent with the level of technology seen in Rise of the Cybermen / Age of Steel, and may suggest that the Cybermen had access to the alternate-universe Torchwood files.
  • In describing how different races refer to the Void, the Doctor refers to the Eternals, seen in Enlightenment. The Doctor fails to mention that the TARDIS has itself been in the Void at least twice (The Mind Robber and Logopolis, both of which have the TARDIS taken out of time and space).
  • The Doctor's manipulation of Yvonne Hartman (when he stops trying actively to convince her to stop the Ghost Shift) is reminisicent of his manipulation of the scientists in Tomb of the Cybermen, although with different ends in mind. In both cases, however, the Doctor has some idea of what is going to happen next and deliberately chooses to be coy and manipulative rather than just revealing what he knows (or suspects) is going on.
  • The Cybermen and the Daleks previous appeared in the same story together in The Five Doctors, but never interacted. A story involving both races was planned in 1967, but scrapped when Terry Nation would not give permission for the Daleks to be used.
  • The sarcophagous next to the TARDIS in the Torchwood warehouse is an intentional reference to Pyramids of Mars.
  • The Doctors plan to infiltrate Lumic's processing plant, above, between, below, is reminiscint of his plan to gain entrance to Rassilons tower in The Five Doctors.
  • Rose refers to the Gelth when talking of the ghosts, the creatures she and the Doctor encountered in The Unquiet Dead.
  • The names of the Daleks from the Cult of Skaro are Thay, Sec, Jast and Caan.
  • Rose remembers the last time the Doctor tried to send her to safety, away from him in The Parting of the Ways. She also recalls the events of her becoming the bad wolf, when she channelled the power of the time vortex to destroy the Daleks.
  • The Daleks in the Void Ship have been in hiding since the Time War's end, and thus are as surprised to see the Doctor as he is to see them. They ask him, "How did you survive the Time War?", word-for-word mimicing his own question to the Daleks in The Parting of the Ways
  • The Doctor drops hints of his own involvement in the Time War, mentioning that he fought on the front lines, and was present at the "fall of Arcadia". The statement creates more questions than it answers, though, since the Doctor is not a soldier, and we don't know what significance Arcadia might have. On the other hand, it's reminiscent of his statement that he was with the Filipinio army at the battle of Reykjavik in the 51st Century in The Talons of Weng-Chiang. And of course, where the Daleks are concerned, the Doctor has been willing to make an exception to his general pacifism since their very first appearance in The Daleks.
  • While it's somewhat understandable due to time constraints, it's a little odd that UNIT is not clearly in evidence or explicitly mentioned during scenes involving fighting.
  • The Daleks recognize the alternate-universe Cybermen as "resembling" the Mondasian/Telosian Cybermen. The dialogue suggests that they also recognise that these Cybermen are different.
  • Pete Tyler's universe includes Torchwood, but it's never really clear if there's an alternate Doctor in that universe, or if perhaps the point of divergence between the two universes came after the Doctor's adventure in Tooth and Claw that leads to Torchwood's formation. Without some explanation of this sort, it's not entirely clear why Torchwood would exist, since it stems directly from the Doctor's interactions with Queen Victoria. (Rewatching Father's Day, it's momentarily tempting to think that the alternate universe was created by Rose saving Pete, but Pete and Jackie never had Rose at all in that universe, and Rose was a baby when "her" Pete Tyler died.)
  • Pete Tyler says to the Doctor that he knows who he (the Doctor) is, now. It's not clear if this is because Mickey has told him everything he knows (which is really quite a lot), or if Pete has read the alternate universe's Torchwood files.
  • The Void Ship's Daleks appear to be from "our" universe (based on their references to the Time War and recognition of the Doctor), but the Cybermen followed the Void Ship from their universe to ours. This suggests that the Void Ship has been ping-ponging around or otherwise traversing universes, rather than simply waiting in the Void to emerge, and either way it's implied that the crack the TARDIS fell through in Rise of the Cybermen was caused by the Void Ship.
  • In addition to the Black Dalek successfully escaping (presumably his shell is essentially a self-contained time capsule), we do not see the fate of the Cyber-converted Yvonne Hartman.
  • The new President of Great Britain in Pete's universe is Harriet Jones, and her Presidency is being hailed as a golden age. In "our" universe, she was first seen as MP for Flydale North in Aliens of London / World War Three, at the end of which she begins to take charge in the chaos, and the Doctor remembers that she goes on to become a three-term Prime Minister responsible for Britain's Golden Age. In The Christmas Invasion she is Prime Minister, but her actions toward the end lead the Doctor to attempt to topple her government with just six words, suggesting to her aid, "Don't you think she looks tired?". In Love & Monsters, Victor Kennedy is seen reading a newspaper with headlines suggesting her government is still embattled, but nothing on screen has suggested it's actually fallen.
  • Bad Wolf Bay, the beach the Doctor and Rose say their goodbyes from, relates back to the running theme of series one, where the words ‘bad wolf’ appeared in the majority of places the ninth Doctor and Rose landed, the reason for which was given in The Parting of the Ways.
  • According to the Torchwood website, most of the humans who were cyber-converted were pulled into the void along with the original Cybermen. A few had their cyber-components wrenched from them but those whose components were made in this universe were left behind. Most of these people died shortly afterwards but one appears in the Torchwood episode Cyberwoman.
  • The series will return at Christmas with an episode called The Runaway Bride.
